The practice of self-discipline helps you to persist with your plans and decisions until you achieve them. It also displays as an inner strength that helps you to overcome bad habits, laziness, and procrastination. Self-discipline is an important ingredient for success. It is the ability not to give up regardless of setbacks and failures. In fact, it is an important pillar of stable, long-term success. It is a skill that will help you understand the importance of life. Life presents problems and challenges on the path to success. To act above those challenges, you must act with determination and perseverance. Lack of self-discipline may lead to problems such as frustration, relationship problems, and health issues. Just as some people have weak muscles, they can become strong with training. It’s the same with self-discipline. You can develop and strengthen self-discipline like any other skill, through training. You can develop self-discipline at any time. The practice of self-discipline will help you: • Avoid carelessness • Fulfill the promises you make • Overcome bad habits like procrastination for example • Engage in good habits like daily movement/exercise, cooking and eating real food, getting good sleep, breathing well even when your mind tells you to ignore these practices • Stay focused on your diet and resisting the temptation of eating unhealthy food • Waking early in the morning • Overcome the bad habit of watching too much television • Start reading motivational books and implementing what you’ve learned • Meditating regularly We know that self-discipline is an important skill every person who wants to achieve more in life must possess. The skill of self-discipline is essential in every aspect of life. Even though most people recognize the benefits of self-discipline, very few do something to reinforce and grow this beneficial skill. Contrary to some beliefs, self-discipline is not being harsh to yourself or living a restrictive lifestyle. Self-discipline also means self-control. It is a sign of inner strength and control of your actions, and your reactions. Self-discipline provides the power to stick to hard decisions and follow them without changing your mind. This means self-discipline is an important requirement for achieving vital goals. If you keep working and developing the skill, you will become stronger. This is a simple and stress-free way to learn how to cook real food in your own kitchen. Today we are sharing 3 of our favourite recipes with you. When you’re getting started with home cooking, finding recipes is easy and today we are including 3 for you to use in your new home cooking practice. We have included a recipe for Lemon-Pepper Baked Chicken Wings, Easy Spicy Roasted Cauliflower and Marinated Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce. Enjoy and be sure to let us know your comments below. Lemon-Pepper Baked Chicken Wings These spicy baked chicken wings are perfect for game day or anytime you need to whip up a casual, yet delicious, appetizer. Making your own homemade flavoured seasonings is easy. However, finding the perfect balance of flavours is more of an art than a science, because individual tastes vary so widely. The proportions shared here offer a safe starting point. The whole black peppercorns impart a BOLD flavour to this seasoning, so it’s best to start with a small amount and adjust upwards until you find the level of heat you prefer. Once you do, you can create larger batches of this seasoning and store the remaining amounts in an airtight container for several months. Prep time: 50 minutes (includes drying time for zest which can be done in advance) Cook time: 50 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients: Lemon-Pepper Seasoning: 4-5 large organic lemons, zested 1 T. kosher salt 1 t. black peppercorns, crushed Chicken Wings: 4 lbs. chicken wings, tips removed and patted dry 3 T. extra virgin olive oil Directions: Position oven rack to center position and preheat oven to warm (lowest setting). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside. To prepare the lemon-pepper seasoning, wash the lemons and pat dry. Remove zest from each lemon with a microplane. While doing so, collect as much of the flavorful yellow outer layer as possible, while avoiding the more bitter white layer below. Spread the zest in a thin layer on the parchment paper and place in the oven. After 20 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and shake to make sure the zest is drying evenly. Return to oven until thoroughly dried, approximately 25-30 minutes. Remove dried lemon zest from the oven and increase oven temperature to 425°F. Add dried lemon zest to a spice grinder or food processor along with salt and black peppercorns. Grind ingredients until desired consistency is reached. Taste and adjust the ratio of salt and pepper as desired. In a large bowl, combine chicken wings with olive oil and 1 - 2 tablespoons of lemon-pepper seasoning and toss until evenly coated. Arrange seasoned chicken wings in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Do not overcrowd. Place baking sheet on center rack of the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove baking sheet from oven and turn each wing to ensure they cook evenly on all sides. Return to oven and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until wings are browned and crispy. Remove from oven and serve immediately with sliced celery and blue cheese or ranch dressing, if desired. Easy Spicy Roasted Cauliflower This is a perfect side dish for a quick and easy weeknight meal. Just toss it all together and pop it in the oven for a flavorful, low-carb side that pairs well with everything from poultry to beef and pork roasts. Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 25-27 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 large head cauliflower, rinsed, dried, and separated into florets 3 T. extra virgin olive oil 2 - 3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely minced 2 t. crushed red pepper flakes Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ½ c. Parmesan cheese, freshly grated, divided Directions: Preheat oven to 450˚F and line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Add cauliflower florets, olive oil, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes to a large bowl and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Spread seasoned cauliflower on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 20-25 minutes at 450˚F, stirring once to ensure cauliflower cooks evenly. Remove from oven and set the broiler to high. Evenly sprinkle cauliflower with ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese and place under the broiler until golden brown (approximately 2 minutes). Remove from oven and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese and serve immediately. Marinated Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce Chimichurri is a classic sauce from Argentina traditionally served with different types of grilled meat. For the best flavour, prepare the Chimichurri sauce and marinate the flank steaks the night before. You’ll be glad you did! Prep time: 10 minutes + time to marinate Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 Chimichurri Sauce ½ c. extra virgin olive oil 1/3 c. red wine vinegar 1 c. fresh flat-leaf parsley 1/3 c. fresh cilantro 2 cloves fresh garlic, peeled ¾ t. crushed red pepper flakes 3 T. fresh lemon juice 1 t. ground cumin Salt and pepper, to taste Remaining Ingredients ¼ c. extra virgin olive oil 3 T. fresh lime juice 2 cloves fresh garlic, chopped Salt and pepper, to taste 1½ lbs. flank steak, sliced into thin strips 1 T. extra virgin olive oil Directions Combine the olive oil, vinegar, parsley, cilantro, garlic, red pepper flakes, lemon juice, and cumin in a food processor and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and set aside. In a small glass bowl, combine the olive oil, lime juice, and chopped garlic with a fork. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. Place the flank steak in a large, sealable plastic bag and add the olive oil mixture. Tightly seal the bag and turn a couple of times to coat the steak in the marinade. Place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to overnight. To prepare, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and allow excess to drip off before adding to the hot skillet. Cook the steak for 3-4 minutes, then turn and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium-rare results. Adjust cooking times to reach the desired level of doneness. Remove from heat and transfer steak to a cutting surface. Let rest for 5 minutes before cutting into very thin slices against the grain. To serve, drizzle steak with some Chimichurri sauce and pass the remaining sauce for those who prefer a little more. Enjoy! Share your ideas, questions and comments below. Everyone experiences negative thoughts and the best way to deal with them initially is to neutralize them. So, if your negative thought is “I will never learn how to swim” you can neutralize this with “I am an excellent swimmer”. It is all about positives and negatives. Affirmations are positive statements that you make about yourself repeatedly. The reason that this works so well is that you are bombarding your subconscious mind with these messages. Your Subconscious cannot Differentiate between Positive and Negative Your subconscious mind will pick out various words when it hears them. If you say to yourself “I am a loser” then it will focus on the word “loser”. Creating an affirmation like “I am not a loser” will not be effective because again the focus is on the word “loser”. When you are writing your affirmations, you need to look for opposites. For the example above, the opposite of “loser” is “winner”, so it is best to use this in your affirmation. You could write an affirmation like “I am a winner”. When your subconscious mind hears that you are a winner repeatedly it will start to question you being a loser. After a period of time, the perception that you are a winner will replace the notion that you are a loser. Affirmations Work There have been numerous studies into affirmations, and they all revealed then when they were performed correctly there were positive changes in the individual. The most important thing to note about this is “performing them correctly”. You need to get your affirmations right when you create them and then you need to use them properly to get the best results. It is not just a case of finding some affirmation examples online and then copying them and expecting them to work for you. Many people think that affirmations are a waste of time. Their perception is that affirmations are just statements of hope and a wish list. But this is not the case. Lots have people have transformed their lives using the power of affirmations. Have you ever taken the time to seriously consider what your values are? We aren’t talking about something’s monetary worth here–your personal core values, or your basic and fundamental knowings or attitudes that guide your actions, are a huge part of how you live your life. Way back in 1999 I decided to make some major changes in my career and began to train as a Life Coach. Prior to this Life Coach training, I had never heard of core values. I had no idea what that even meant for my life and my life at that time was frustrating and not fulfilling. As we began learning about what core values were, it was a light bulb moment for me. I was struggling with life and by learning what my core values are I immediately realized why I was feeling the way I was! There was not one core value that I was living in my life. You see, living in a way to honour your values is very powerful. Today I will share with you the way I was able to Clarify my values. If you set aside some time, an hour would be an excellent start you can do this. Why would you want to take the time to clarify your values to live a healthy and vibrant life? Living your values makes your heart sing! Living your values allows you to honour yourself at a core level. When I learned what my core values are it changed everything when it came to my health and for that, I am very grateful. Understanding and defining your personal values is a major step toward living the life you want to live. When you focus on your fundamental values, you ensure you’re living your life in a way that suits you and all of your goals, dreams, and interests. What are some examples of personal core values? There are quite a few personal values out there. Values differ in importance from person to person. In fact, differences in values often lead to lots of conflict and controversy between people! While the importance of different values varies so greatly from person to person, here are a few examples of what some core values might be: ● Adventure ● Loyalty ● Creativity ● Empathy ● Boldness ● Strength ● Relationships ● Faith ● Humour ● Happiness ● Knowledge ● Optimism ● Love ● Self-respect ● Honesty ● Status ● Trustworthiness ● Health ● Fitness ● ….and many, many more! Personal values can often be described in one word, capturing the essence of larger opinions and feelings about something. For example, if one of your personal values is relationships, it may be very important for you to honour all your relationships in life–romantic, familial, friendships, and otherwise. How do you determine what your true personal values are? Your personal values exist deep within yourself. These values, when measured against how you’re making choices and living your life, help you determine whether or not you’re living life the way you truly want to live it. Often, your values can be a big indicator of whether or not you’re following the right pathway in life. These values work in sync with your intuition. For example, when you get that sudden urge that “something doesn’t feel quite right,” consider how the present situation aligns with your personal values. If it clashes with your basic fundamental values and knowledge, you’re likely getting signals that you’re heading down the wrong path. Determining your values can feel tricky, but there are ways to narrow down your feelings and best understand where your fundamental beliefs lie. A good way to begin determining your personal values is to look through an extensive list of them; you can find them online and in various psychology and self-help books. Browse this list and determine which values resonate most with you. Don’t spend a ton of time considering each one extensively. Instead, allow your intuition to guide you and quickly highlight each one that feels right to you. Once you have a highlighted list, focus on the ones you marked with more consideration–think about why each of these values stood out to you and jot down a few notes for each one. At this point, you can even take your remaining values and arrange them in a list beginning with the one you find most important. How can you use your core values to live life the way you want? People face tough challenges and decisions every day. However, when you have a good grasp of what your core values are, you’re more likely to make choices in a way that makes you feel confident in your decision-making. For example, after making your list of personal values, keep it handy. The next time you face a tough challenge, pull out your list. Consider each of your options against your personal values–which choice best aligns with your values? Are there any options that seem to push against your personal values? Use these driving questions with your list of values to make an informed decision you can feel good about afterward. By doing this work you now are able to live your best life! Whether you get out for a daily walk, take classes at a local gym, or ride your bike to work, you will notice an enhanced mood very quickly and over time you will begin to see how you have improved how you feel, more energy and vitality. Exercise also allows you to clear your mind and step away from the daily stresses that life brings. Many studies link physical activity and a solid fitness practice with reduced risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses. Make time in your schedule to exercise at least a couple of days a week and you feel happier and healthier overall. There does seem to be a common belief that we have no control over how we feel, and many say that their illnesses or health challenges are normal because they run in the family. This is simply not true. You and I actually have more control over how we feel than we believe. There are some very common things that we can do to move toward that top 10% who have vibrant good health, and you may be surprised that it is not as challenging as you may think. We also know today that movement matters for our best life and we are not doing enough of it today. Here are 4 benefits to living more physically active that can help you reduce your stress levels. 1. Exercise Helps to Increase Your Endorphins One of the top ways that exercise can help with your stress level is by boosting your endorphins. With regular physical activity, you are able to release the endorphins in your brain. These are basically the happy chemicals that are known to boost your mood. When this happens, not only does it help with your mood and ease anxiety and depression, but it is really good for stress too. Just focus on intentionally getting in more exercise or movement in your day and see how much better you feel. 2. You Can Use It for Fight or Flight Exercise is also a really good way to get through that fight or flight response you tend to get when you are really stressed out. Fight or flight is the response you get when you feel like you need to get away from the current situation you are in. It can be a hard feeling to break unless you have a way to channel that response, which is what exercising is going to do. Getting outdoors for a walk, or an easy run, are really good ways to help with your fight or flight response because of stress. 3. Exercise Can Clear Your Mind When you are stressed, you typically have so much on your mind that it is hard to get a handle on everything. We feel difficult, exhausting and frustrating because we are not moving, right? Well, imagine for a minute you are swimming upstream! Can you do it? The habits that I formed around exercising daily has helped me feel better, I am stronger which is definitely important as we age, I have also reduced my weight by over 150 lbs and certainly improved my energy. So, we know we’re supposed to stay active because movement really does matter for a healthy and fit life, yet how many of us have struggled with exercising daily as a habit, right? What we know for sure is the numbers are staggering. Brendon Burchard writes in his book High Performers that; 2/3rd of Americans are obese, 20% of Americans don’t even do the minimum amount of aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity recommended by the CDC and 42% of American adults aren’t even doing enough to manage stress. Stress is the ULTIMATE energy and well-being killer. When we exercise throughout the week, we build our bodies, keeping our energy levels high, which makes for added productivity in all the other areas of our life. Yet exercise is also good for us in other ways. Exercise helps people to sleep better and keeps us generally healthier as we age. Exercise not only keeps your body in top form but leads to better moods and overall mental health. So how do you make exercise a daily habit? Follow these simple tips, and you’ll be on the road to building this healthy habit in no time! 1. Make time each and every day. Being deliberate about when you exercise means that it’s more likely to happen, even when life is busy. Also, it trains your body to begin to enjoy your exercise habit. Before long, you’ll find yourself looking forward to your movement practice and the many health and well-being benefits it offers. 2. Use your smartphone. As you start to develop the habit of daily exercise you may want to set a reminder on your phone for when it’s time to exercise, so you don’t forget or put it off until it's too late in the day. 3. Prepare yourself. It may sound obvious however by getting into the habit of putting your exercise clothes and gear out the night before so you can’t use the excuse that you don’t have time to find everything. Keep your exercise bag right near the door and ready to go. 4. Just leave when ready. Is it time to go? Don’t overthink it. Just go whether you feel like it or not. Your body will click into gear once you get started. This is a habit I use regularly. I don’t feel like going out for my morning walk and yet each and every day I get out and walk in the morning. It really is that simple. Just leave when ready. 5. Take baby steps. By starting small, you won’t overwhelm yourself, or worse, do damage to a body not ready for a heavy workout. You can always increase your time/reps later when you become fitter. You’ve heard the quote “Inch by inch, life's a cinch. Yard by yard, life's hard.” ― John Bytheway 6. Keep it fun and interesting. This is an important idea to keep in mind. Nothing screams boredom more than the same routine day after day. Mix up what you’re doing – run a new route or change up your workout. Adding new types of exercise also makes sure you are working all your different muscles too. 7. Take a break – occasionally. As you build your new healthy habit, you don’t want to skip days. Consistency is key. However, it’s good to have the occasional lighter exercise day when you’ve recently upped your game or when you are especially tired or sick. Once you make exercise a daily habit, you’ll come to look forward to it. You won’t even think about it; you’ll just do it. You Think before You Act Because of your ability to think things through, match the situation with your values, and then make a choice based on that knowledge, you tend to make better decisions that benefit your health by avoiding dangerous situations.
