![]() This month we have shared ideas to help you live a natural organic lifestyle. It is our belief that by eliminating toxins in the food you eat, and they way those foods are grown, the products used to clean your home and office, thinking of health in a natural organic way leads to living your best life. The following is a list of this month’s articles:

Join our FREE Walking Challenge here ![]() We are discussing living an organic lifestyle and removing toxins this month. Today I want to share an idea I wrote about many years ago. Before I share today’s topic, I have a personal story to share. In 2011 I decided to do a charity 700 km. bike ride from Toronto to Montreal. It was a great experience, and I had many people help me raise the money needed to qualify to do the ride. A few years later one of the women who helped me in my fundraising asked me if I would be willing to come out to her ball hockey game and help her raise some money one evening. I was happy to do it. So, my job that evening was the following: I was given a box full of neoprene beverage coolers with a pink ribbon printed on it and asked to stand at the door with this box. I was to ask every person that came into the arena to give me a dollar to support the league and they in turn would get this neoprene beverage cooler with the pink ribbon. Not once did I ever mention what the pink ribbon meant, I just asked if they wanted to support the league. People threw their money at me. In no time the box was empty of product and filled with money. I was stunned at how quickly and easily people gave money for what they perceived as supporting breast cancer. Just the idea that as a society we throw money at these so-called charities that so much of the money goes to top-heavy payouts that are not the people that need it the most. If you are not sure of this go out and read Murder By Injection by Eustace Mullins. It was a big eye-opener for me and it might be the same for you. This evening got me thinking and it took me a while to write this article which of course I did almost ten years ago. I have once again I've been thinking a lot about health and how we look at it today during this global health situation we have been living with for the last fourteen months. This has been a time for so many people to begin to eat well, cook their own meals at home in their own kitchens, get outdoors to exercise, sleep better, and so much more. And yet all I hear about is how so many have gained weight and there has been no information on how to improve their health by any government in the world. Now is the time to think about better health more than any time in the last 100 years in my opinion. What do you say? Today the idea I would like to share is Why Don’t We Honour People That Have Good Health With a Health Ribbon? Why don't we have a health ribbon to honour those people that have abundant optimal health? Why don’t we look to those people that are vibrant, active and dare I say healthy as something that we want in our own lives? What originally inspired me to write this article as I was at the grocery store and as I was looking for a parking spot, I saw on a car one of those coloured ribbons that stand for "fighting a disease". You know what I mean right? Fighting breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, cancer in general and specific kinds of cancer and on and on. I can't tell you why that day was different however I was overwhelmed with the question why not have a ribbon for those individuals that want and have made the decision to live a healthy lifestyle? What about a health ribbon? Why not show honour to those that have made the decision to live a healthier lifestyle? Why not honour those people who don't drain the hospital system? Why not honour those that get out consistently and exercise, eat well and set an example for others through their healthy choices? You see I don't really feel that fighting disease is a positive way to think about it. In my way of thinking, fighting causes stress and why on earth does anyone want more stress when they are living with a health challenge? And why does anyone have to be stressed out to choose health and make huge changes when they are in crisis? This is just more stress. Why not have a ribbon for those that are focusing on health? You know why not create a new paradigm in how we see health and sickness! And why not think of Health as the pinnacle of living a modern life rather than feeling like crap because of poor food choices, lack of exercise, poor quality sleep, poor thinking, dehydration, for example. Maybe the time has come for people to create balance and health in their lives and be recognized and honoured in that. Maybe it is time for the incentive in our modern world for people to see the benefit of living a healthy and vibrant life rather than one of poor energy, exhaustion poor mobility. You know those individuals who do their best daily to eat a balanced real food eating strategy, eat real organic food, buy local, high-quality real food, cook their meals in their own kitchen, eat their real food meals together at the dining table, get a positive amount of exercise each day, get a solid sleep each night, drink water that is in line with their needs each day, play, meditate, laugh, learn, give back to their community in some way, OK you get the picture right? Now I am in no way saying we don't support anyone who is having health challenges as sometimes you can do all things right and still become ill! We can then truly help these people by sharing the knowledge for a better way through illness. Really just got to thinking about how we can change the focus to health and well-being rather than illness? What would it take for most of the world to want to live a healthy lifestyle? So What about a health ribbon?? Would be great to hear your thoughts in the comment area. Let me know what colour you think would be best for a Health Ribbon. I have ideas however would be great to hear your input on this. What would a Focus on Health and the chance to celebrate that health look like? Join our FREE Walking Challenge here ![]() My journey to living an organic lifestyle began many years ago when I studied Holistic Lifestyle Coaching with the CHEK Institute. We learned that the toxins in GMO has been detrimental to our health. So, today we want to share you with why it might be important to consider eliminating GMO's from your diet. We have been discussing living your best life by eliminating toxins and enjoying the benefits of an organic lifestyle. We must take some time today to talk about learning the risks of GMO foods to truly live your best organic life. Be sure to share any ideas you have in the comments below and let us know how we can help you. GMO foods (genetically modified) are those that come from organisms whose DNA or genetic material has been altered in a way different from how it naturally occurs. The process of genetically modifying foods is referred to as gene technology or modern biotechnology. It has also been called recombinant DNA technology or genetic engineering at times. At the present moment foods considered GMO come primarily from plants. In theory, most genetically modified crops are altered to improve the yield of those crops via the introduction of resistance to plant disease or by increasing the tolerance of herbicides. Food producers have also seen reductions in food prices through improved yields and reliability which has increased the appeal of this method of production. Presently there is also work being done to derive genetically modified foods from microorganisms or animals that have been genetically modified. Other potential uses for genetic modification in the future that are being looked at might also include changing the nutrient content of food, reducing its allergenic potential, or improving the efficiency of food production systems (World Health Organization, 2019). The most common genetically modified foods include but are not limited to: - Fruits and Vegetables - Vegetable Oil - Papaya - Soy - Sugar Beets - Yellow Squash - Zucchinis These items are used to make popular food items such as milk (cows fed genetically modified soy products), tofu (GMO soybeans), cereals (corn and soy products), sweetened juices (corn and sugar beet-based sweeteners), carbonated soft drinks (high fructose corn syrup made from sugar beets), baby formula (GMO corn, soy, and sugar beets), and frozen foods (starch added from GM corn, as well as fats and oils from GM plants, citric acid from GM microorganisms) (Piedmont Healthcare, June 14). Health issues associated with the consumption of GMO food include but are not limited to infertility, insulin regulation issues, quicker ageing, immune problems, alterations in major organs, alterations in the gastrointestinal system, and hormonal imbalance and changes. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine notes that these and other adverse effects linked to the intake of GMO foods are more than a causal association. They note that the strength of association and consistency between GMOs and illness or disease has been adequately confirmed and outlined in numerous animal studies (Disabled World, 2013). There are also reported risks to the environment. A 2018 report in PNAS described changes to ecosystems that occur when food is genetically altered which can lead to chain reactions that have a larger impact over time. An example of this can be seen when an herbicide used to kill a certain pest eliminates the natural enemy of another pest. A response to this is that the pest rises in strength which leads farmers to increase their pesticide use. This increase then causes pesticide resistance and a new species of pesticide-resistant pests appear (Myers, 2011). Genetically modified foods pose a significant health risk and must actively be avoided as they are so readily accessible and available for consumption today. Taking measures to buy Non-GMO or what we now call organic real foods is a good strategy to reduce or eliminate the addition of GMOs to the diet, thereby mitigating potential negative health impacts. Be sure to share any ideas and thoughts in the comments below. Let us know how we can help you. A personal story about why I stopped dying my hair. Many years ago, I went to see a Live Blood Cell Practitioner and as he was observing the blood under the microscope, I was told that there were these large toxins in my blood sample that he could see. What he told me was it was most likely hair dye because at that time I was dying my hair monthly to hide the grey hair. This information was so upsetting to me that the hair dye toxins showed up and could be so bad for my health that I never dyed my hair again. So, do you enjoy dying your hair regularly? Or maybe even just occasionally? Although many people may think that products such as hair dye are harmless, there are a number of toxins which can be found in these products. It should come as no surprise that hair dyes are composed of a collection of chemicals. But what you may not know is that some of these chemicals have been tied to cancer of the lymph node system known as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, as well as bladder cancer. https://medicine.yale.edu/news/yale-medicine-magazine/increased-risk-of-nonhodgkins-lymphoma-linked-to-hair/ & https://www.webmd.com/beauty/news/20000404/bladder-cancer-hair-dye#2 Some hair dyes even contain lead which has been tied to the damage of the nervous and reproductive systems. And even if you are a guy, or don’t dye your hair, doesn’t mean you get off scot-free. https://www.consumerreports.org/lead/removing-lead-acetate-from-hair-dye/ This is because several of the aforementioned chemicals end up in the water supply when the woman who dyes her hair washes off the majority of the dye during the dying process. Whether you are part of the large portion of people who dye their hair or not, the chemicals found in hair dye should worry you, and you must work to avoid exposure. Luckily, there are several steps you can take to reduce your exposure to these toxic chemicals in your everyday life. Here is a link to our blog archive of this month’s posts if you want more information to help you reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and to help you live an organic lifestyle. https://wendybottrell.weebly.com/blog/archives/05-2021 Will you eliminate toxic hair dye for better health? Join our FREE Walking Challenge here Remove Teflon Cookware![]() As we share ideas to help you live an organic lifestyle today our topic is Why Remove Teflon Cookware From Your Kitchen For Your Best Life. Teflon is a brand name used for a group of synthetic chemicals, the most common of which is known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Teflon has existed for around 90 years at this point and remains a popular chemical to use for protecting fabrics and creating non-stick surfaces on certain types of cookware. Teflon chemicals are popular because they’re very stable, meaning they don’t react much when put in contact with other chemicals and substances. The EPA currently does not list Teflon as an official carcinogenic substance. However, Teflon brand name chemicals are routinely tested to monitor any correlation between them and cancer cases. Some forms of Teflon chemicals were linked to tumors in some lab animals, but the research and potential connections to the human body remain inconclusive. Fortunately, Teflon is easier to avoid than some other toxins. Simply research new cookware brands and models before committing to buy a product that may be labeled as non-stick or Teflon. To avoid exposure to Teflon:

We believe that making changes to live, eat, and breathe with fewer toxins is worth looking at for your best life. Today’s ideas are Top key reasons to eat an organic real food diet. Be sure to share any ideas in the comments below. And let us know how we can help you. The term “organic real foods” is thrown around a lot these days. While most of us are aware that eating an organic real food diet is the way to go as it pertains to health and wellness, the exact definition is somewhat obscured. An organic real food is any food product that remains in its natural form, free of any artificial additives, preservatives, or other manmade ingredients. Examples include organic fruits and vegetables. The mainstream diet of today’s society has significantly strayed away from an organic real foods approach. Many of the food products we consume are a far cry from their original form, loaded with harmful preservatives and added sweeteners. There is undoubtedly a correlation between this type of diet and the prevalence of many chronic health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. In this article, we will discuss the top reasons why a diet centred on organic real foods is a vastly superior way of fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to function optimally. Full Nutritional Benefits One of the detriments of overly processed foods is a significant reduction in the full nutritional content available in their natural form. In order to lengthen shelf life and improve taste, valuable nutrients are stripped away. Given that organic real foods are consumed in their purest form, they provide your body with a multitude of vitamins and minerals you would otherwise be deprived of by opting for processed alternatives. Because of the inferior state of food today, many individuals rely on vitamin supplements and pharmaceutical products to fill the void. In reality, these nutrients are meant to be provided by diet alone. Organic real foods are a great way to avoid this reliance. Significantly Less Sugar As a society, we have an inherent dependence on sugar, many of us without even realizing it. Many food products today contain a huge amount of added sugar; this is accomplished by using any number of the overly complicated names often found on the label. Just because a product may not specifically list sugar within the ingredients list, it is still most likely present under a different name. It is common knowledge that sugar is a key player in the development of numerous health conditions. While even foods in their natural form can still contain sugar, the actual amount is significantly reduced. When comparing an organic real food to its processed counterpart, it is easy to identify a difference in taste. Food manufacturers use our sugar addiction to their advantage, knowing that the sweeter and more satisfying they make a product, the faster it will fly off of the shelves. More Fiber, Less Eating Another negative aspect of overly processed foods is that they experience a marked reduction in fibre content. Given that fibre has the ability to cause us to feel full more quickly, a lack of fibre is often responsible for overeating. Furthermore, consuming a diet that is adequate in fibre is essential for digestive health. By sticking to organic real foods, your risk of overeating and excess caloric consumption is reduced. Empty, processed foods are slower to trigger the brain into realizing you have eaten enough, which can quickly lead to obesity. Reduce Systemic Inflammation Inflammation is an interesting topic. At the appropriate times and for short durations, inflammation is a natural response of the body to heal damaged tissues and defend against various infectious agents. However, chronic inflammation has a devastating effect on overall health. Chronic inflammation is linked to an enormous number of diseases including diabetes, obesity and even cancer. Many of the artificial additives present in today’s food are clinically proven to cause an exaggerated inflammatory response in the body. While we may be unaware that these additives are not meant to be consumed on a regular basis, the body inherently realizes the issue right away and responds the only way it knows how to trigger the inflammatory process. Eating organic real foods is an effective way to avoid excess inflammation in your body and spare it from constantly feeling the need to protect itself. Pay The Grocery Store, Not The Doctor You’ve heard the saying “you are what you eat”, right? A common, and warranted, complaint of organic real foods is that they almost always come at a steeper price compared to processed options. It is somewhat ironic that buying something in its natural form is more expensive than other products that have basically gone through a genetic mutation before reaching the grocery store. However, looking farther ahead than your next grocery store bill is a worthwhile endeavour. Given that we have discussed the adverse effects of consuming artificially processed food items on a regular basis, think about spending more on whole foods as paying now instead of later. While you can certainly save some money upfront by purchasing cheap items at the supermarket, do you really think the reduced price at the checkout is worth the enormous medical bills and the decreased quality of life down the road? As we continue to discuss and share ideas about living an organic life today we have 10 tips for you.
There are a host of ways you can embark upon living a more green and organic life. Let’s review 10 tips to live a more eco-friendly organic life. Recycle. Whether recycling products via the recycle bin or recycling center or finding creative ways to repurpose items in your own home and garden, recycling is a strong way to reduce waste. Choose organic food and products. This is especially important for produce since nearly 70% of fresh produce that is sold within the United States contains residue of potentially harmful chemical pesticides. Another example is products made with PVC, which contain dangerous chemicals such as lead and cadmium that can be toxic for kids and adults. Planting is another way to reduce your carbon footprint. When you can just pull from food items you’ve grown at home, you don’t have to travel and contribute to pollution created from driving and car exhaust. Additionally, you have the security of knowing exactly what is in your food and ensuring that it’s organic, without pesticides and of the best quality to consume. Conserve Energy. Turning electrical appliances off or unplugging them is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Avoid Plastics. Plastics can be a significant contributor of BPA and other toxins. Avoiding their use and opting for glass or stainless steel can be a better and safer way to protect against the toxins that plastics can potentially contain, as well as cut down on plastic waste in the environment. Alternative Flours. It is not possible for crops to be grown in the same soil each year without the nutrients being replaced that are taken by the plants. Switching the flour you use can help with this rotation. Spelt or wheat flours are often grown in rotation with rye and clover to help replace lost nitrogen. Change Your Cleaning Products. Switching to green cleaning products can reduce the risk of exposure to volatile organic compounds. Green cleaning products use more natural and organic ingredients, and you can also make your own using lemon essential oils. Add more plants in your home. Plants are a great way to purify the air and reduce the number of potential toxins in the air. Whether it’s adding more plants in the home or planting trees and other plants outside the home, this can benefit the indoor and outdoor environment. Promote Bees. Bees are a vital part of the ecosystem. They pollinate plants which help with the production of food and oxygenation of the environment. Plant flowers that encourage bees to pollinate to help promote the growth and expansion of our food supply and promote cleaner and healthier air. Watch Your Fabrics. Synthetic fabrics are made from chemicals that can endanger the health and also have an environmental impact. One of those is vinyl which is made from PVC. Experts advise that PVC contains dangerous chemical additives including phthalates, lead, and cadmium, which are dangerous for children and adults. Choose vegan fabrics versus those made from animals. Consider the durability of fabrics to extend their life and reduce waste. Today we share ideas to help you have safer cosmetics.
“The average woman uses 12 different beauty products every day — cleansers, conditioners, hair dyes, fragrances, skin care products, scented lotions, nail polish, and makeup, to name a few. Take a quick glance at the labels, and you'll see a cocktail of chemical components. You might assume that all these ingredients have been tested to ensure that they're safe for long-term use. That's not the case. At least on the federal level, no one is checking to make sure that the chemicals you're putting on your body are harmless. "Products are tested to make sure they don't cause short-term problems, such as skin irritation. But they're not tested for long-term safety," says Dr. Kathryn M. Rexrode, associate professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Women's Health at Harvard Medical School. The FDA steps in only if people actually complain about a product because they suspect it harmed them. Prior to that, the onus is on the company alone. There are several ingredients commonly used in cosmetic products that can in fact be a harm to humans and the environment. Chemicals in cosmetics can end up in your bloodstream via inhalation, ingestion, and absorption by the skin.” - https://www.health.harvard.edu/womens-health/toxic-beauty Research links some ingredients in cosmetic products to serious health concerns including endocrine disorders, developmental delays, neurological issues, and even cancer. Worse yet, the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate ingredients used in cosmetics. Let’s review the harmful ingredients found in cosmetics. Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is found in cosmetics, shampoos, nail polishes, shower gels, and lotions. This agent can lead to irritation of the respiratory system and the eyes and lead to allergic reactions. Cancers can also be linked to the release of formaldehyde in these products. Lead. Lead is generally found in eye products that contain kohl, kajal, surma, tiro, tozali, kwali, or al-Kahal. Talc is a harmful heavy metal when placed into the body and is not safe to be taken in. Parabens. Parabens can be seen on cosmetic labels as ethylparaben, butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben and are generally seen in makeup, moisturizers, and hair products. Parabens are harmful because they can enter the body through the skin and mimic the hormone estrogen which can cause cancer cells to grow. Phthalates. Phthalates can be found in some hair sprays, nail polishes, and cosmetic fragrances. These agents can create unbalanced hormones, particularly hormones that work with estrogen such as testosterone. Talc. Talc is often found in products such as blush, bronzer, and eye shadow. The potential health risk of untested talc comes from its possible contamination with asbestos which is known to be a cancer-forming chemical. Toluene. Toluene is found in some nail polishes and treatments. It poses danger to the brain, nervous system, and developing fetuses. Presently it is banned from body care products that are sold at Whole Foods, and stores such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens are scheduled to move forward with the same ban. Exposure to dangerous chemicals and agents in cosmetic products can be avoided or minimized. Making the switch to non-toxic cosmetic products can be gradual and involve a series of steps to make the process more manageable and feasible. Reading labels and checking for harmful ingredients or ingredients that you may be unfamiliar with can help you to stray away from potentially harmful ingredients. Products that have an organic certification or another certification by a recognized organization that promotes non-toxic products should be sought out and pursued. Organic produce is the most widely purchased organic product and is grown in accordance with a strict set of guidelines, which protect the environment and natural resources, do not use GMO or synthetic ingredients, and are subject to annual inspections by the National Organic Program, a part of the USDA. Organic fruits and vegetables lack the pesticide residue that plagues many conventionally grown crops. Organic produce will either be labeled as organic or in the absence of a label, codes are used, and organic codes begin with the number 4. Organic beverages must too meet NOP standards of certification and are available at health and whole food stores, farmers markets and some conventional super markets. The may be labeled as 100% organic which means they have 95 to 99% organic ingredients or labeled as made with organic ingredients, which means they contain at least 70% organic ingredients. Grains, and flours are available as organic and like produce, in order for bread, pancake mix, hot cereals, and flour to be certified organic the grower and/or manufacturer must follow strict guidelines to be able to carry the certified organic label on their products. The nonprofit, Humane Farm Animal Care, certifies farmers who produce and sell humanely raised eggs, poultry and livestock. The program ensures and requires that farm animals receive clean air, fresh and species appropriate food, like grass, exposure to sunlight and ample space to exercise and engage in natural behaviors. To be certified organic, farm animals must be raised organically from birth to slaughter and not receive feed from animal sources or by-products. For you, pasture raised and grass fed meat products mean more nutritious and better tasting meat, chicken and dairy. There are many commercial organic cleaning products; two brands are Bon Ami Powder Cleanser, and Attitude All Purpose Eco Cleaner. You can also make your own with vinegar, baking soda, lemons, hydrogen peroxide, and borax, all natural cleaners. Organic makeup is available too! The cosmetic industry is one of the least regulated as far as ingredients used and while many brands claim to use natural ingredients you should read labels carefully and look for the USDA organic label. Most only qualify for the made with organic ingredients label. Bubble & Bee Organic, Juice Beauty, and Intelligent Nutrients are brands that use certified organic ingredients. Organic textiles and natural fiber products include cotton, wool, and they are used to make bed linens, furniture, clothing and much more, two organic brands are Barley & Birch and Earth Linens. Organic toys for kids are being produced to meet demand from parents who are concerned with their children being exposed to chemicals and unnatural elements. Most organic toys are plush toys that are made with certified organic cotton and wool materials. Apple Park and Dandelion are two brands that make organic toys. Seeds, bulbs, plant starters, trees, vegetables, flowers, weed killers, and fertilizers are eligible for USDA organic certification, and many are already approved and certified organic! The organic pet food market is growing by as much as 15% each year, and there are also organic pet toys and beds available too! Requirements for organic pet food are similar to those for livestock; PetGuard and Simply Fido are just two organic pet brands. Organic restaurants are popping up across the country as consumer demand and interest in organic food grows. One survey reported that consumers are willing to pay more for dining in organic and eco-friendly establishments. Looking for an organic brand or specific product? Look to the USDA’s comprehensive “List of Certified USDA Organic Operations” that is an excellent reference. One of the most important ideas is to help you Eliminate Preservatives and Chemicals Used In Packaged Foods For Your Best Life. It is our belief that eating real organic food cooked in your kitchen is one of the simplest ways to improve what you eat daily. We live in a world of convenience food and are literally surrounded by pre-packaged, heavily preserved foods. The ingredients labels often read more like a chemistry experiment checklist than a recipe for food. According to WebMD heavily processed foods are generally packed with sugar, salt, colourings and preservatives and are not particularly healthy. (https://www.webmd.com/diet/ss/slideshow-processed-food). If you are seeking to have a healthier diet it may be best to avoid certain food preservatives and chemicals. Many of these additives to food can be harmful to your health and it may surprise you just how bad some of them are. 1. Ammonium Sulphate According to Aluminummanufacturer.org Ammonium sulphate is an odourless salty-tasting compound used in making fertilizers and printed circuit boards. Doesn’t sound too edible, however, it is used in industrial bread baking as a raising agent. It may not be toxic in small doses but it can cause gastrointestinal problems. (https://www.thedailymeal.com/healthy-eating/chemicals-processed-food-gallery/slide-3 ). 2. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)) This is a well-known additive in many foods especially Asian cuisine and has been in use for decades. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is an approved food additive that is generally deemed safe. It is understood to cause a number of reactions in some people, though, including headaches, nausea, chest pains and weakness. (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/monosodium-glutamate/faq-20058196). 3. Sulfites Commonly added to foods to boost shelf life and add appealing colour, sulphites are an often used additive. According to WebMD, around 1/100 people have a sensitivity to these additives which may range from mild to potentially life-threatening. (https://www.webmd.com/allergies/sulfite-sensitivity). 4. Sodium Benzoate Sodium Benzoate is considered safe as a preservative in foods but under certain circumstances foods that contain this additive may start to produce Benzene. This chemical according to Drugs.com has been shown to have links to cancer. (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/sodium-benzoate#what-it-is ). 5. Nitrates According to WebMD foods that are high in nitrates can be very harmful. The reason for this is that the body cannot digest these nitrates and can lead to increased health risks such as cancer. Nitrates in processed meats are the most harmful whereas naturally occurring nitrates in vegetables can be beneficial. (https://www.unlockfood.ca/en/Articles/Food-technology/The-Truth-about-Nitrates.aspx ). 6. Butylated Hydroxyanisole Used to preserve edible fats as well as those used in the cosmetic industry, Butylated Hydroxyanisole has demonstrated cancer-causing properties. According to Drugs.com tests of high levels of this chemical in rats caused tumours although low levels such as in foods seem safe. (https://www.drugs.com/inactive/butylated-hydroxyanisole-11.html). 7. Potassium Sorbate This food preservative, according to Doctors Healthy Press, can be an irritant when used in beauty products but can be even more harmful when ingested. Prolonged exposure in the diet to this sorbate can lead to gastrointestinal issues as well as dietary deficiencies. (https://www.doctorshealthpress.com/food-and-nutrition-articles/common-side-effects-of-potassium-sorbate/ ). 8. Potassium Bromates According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) potassium bromate is considered a possible cancer-causing preservative. Often used in mass bread making to add strength to the dough, potassium bromate has in tests been shown to cause a higher incidence of benign and malignant tumours. (https://www.ewg.org/research/potassium-bromate). 9. Calcium Disodium (EDTA) Commonly used in medicine to treat heavy metal poisoning from lead, EDTA is also used in food as well. According to WebMD, it is used as a fortifying agent in grain-based breakfast cereals. EDTA should only be consumed in small doses as it can cause issues for those with asthma, heart conditions and pregnant women. (https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1032/edta). 10. Propylene Glycol According to the Paleo Foundation, there may be too much propylene glycol in our food. This chemical is used for flavouring and colour but in high amounts can be harmful. It is most harmful to those who compromised livers or kidneys as it can be hard to expel from the body. This can lead to toxic build-up. (https://paleofoundation.com/what-is-propylene-glycol/). Be sure to get in touch with us if we can help you. Bisphenol A (BPAs) Bisphenol A (also known as BPAs) are found in many plastic products. The compound is used to harden and solidify plastics, making them more durable while also keeping some softness and flexibility. For years, scientists have been building a strong, research-backed case that BPAs are linked to hormonal disruptions and imbalances in human beings. In fact, BPAs have even been found in human blood and urine in studies on the effects of humans and long-term use of plastic products. In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned people about the dangers of BPAs–they were beginning to link them to hormonal imbalances and disruptions to human endocrine systems, which can cause different types of cancer. While BPAs are one of the most common plastic additives, there are others that pose equally grave threats to human health. Often, when a product is labeled “BPA free,” it likely contains another lesser-known additive that can be just as harmful as the BPAs. Because BPAs are discussed further in health reports, this is often the one companies will remove (and then possibly replace with another chemical instead). To reduce your risk of exposures to BPAs and other similar plastic additives, consider ditching plastic products as much as possible. For example, there are many ways to reduce the number of plastics in your life. You can shop with reusable bags, skip the plastic straws in your drinks, carry a metal or glass refillable bottle, and use bath products such as shampoo bars rather than bottled options to cut back on your exposure to plastics. Not only will this reduce your exposure to potentially harmful plastics, but you’ll also do the environment a favor as well. To avoid exposure to BPAs:

It is well known today that consuming fruits and vegetables is part of a healthy diet, but it is important to note that nearly 70% of fresh produce considered non-organic that is sold within the United States contains residue of potentially harmful chemical pesticides. Acute and chronic toxicity of pesticides can lead to: Skin irritation. Allergic reaction. Respiratory tract irritation. Visual and neural disturbances. Intestinal pain. Headache. Fever. Muscle weakness. Fatigue, seizures. And disease such as cancer. Every year the Environmental Working Group publishes its dirty dozen list of the fruits and vegetables that have been found to contain the highest amounts of pesticide residue. These pesticides can remain on the produce even after washing, scrubbing, and peeling. The 2021 list includes apples. Bell peppers. Hot peppers. Celery. Cherries. Grapes. Kale, collard, and mustard greens. Nectarines. Peaches. Pears. Spinach. Strawberries. Tomatoes. Shopping USDA organic, especially as it pertains to the fruits and vegetables on the dirty dozen list is your best option to reduce the ingestion of pesticides. Choosing organic has other benefits including, avoiding exposure to known carcinogens, dramatic and rapid reduction in urinary pesticide concentrations, improved fertility/birth outcomes and reduced risks for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. There is a whole host of immune system disorders that can be caused or exacerbated by the presence of pesticides in the system. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than their pesticide-raised counterparts meaning that they boost immunity and do not have toxic pesticides. Today our topic is Reducing Dietary Pesticide Exposure The Health Benefits For Your Best Life. According to the University of Washington, pesticides are chemical or biological agents which are used to spray crops. Most commonly used on fruits and vegetables, there is a vast array of different pesticides in use with trace amounts remaining on the produce they were used to protect. When we eat produce that has been treated with these pesticides, we often take in some amounts of these toxic chemicals which can cause us harm. (https://depts.washington.edu/ceeh/downloads/FF_Pesticides.pdf). In order to minimize the ingestion of these pesticides, it is advised to eat organic real food when possible. This is because organic crops have been specifically grown and produced without the use of pesticides and this can be beneficial for your health. Developmental Problems According to healthychildren.org exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and while still very young can have negative effects on a child’s development. An increased incidence of birth defects has been connected to pesticide contact during pregnancy. It is also thought that pesticide poisoning in the young can lead to learning problems and potentially cancer in later life. (https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/all-around/Pages/Protecting-Children-from-Pesticides-Information-for-Parents.aspx). Children can be particularly at risk because they may encounter several potential sources of pesticides. A tendency to put things in their mouths during early development can create contamination risk and make the world a minefield for anxious parents. Many parents do not even imagine that the healthy fruits and veggies they feed their children also carry traces of pesticides. This is why an organic real food diet is a good idea for children. Nervous System and Pesticides According to Dr. Keith Nemec of the Total Health Institute studies performed at the University of North Dakota have indicated some pesticides can cause damage to the nervous system. Changes in the part of the brain associated with Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis have been noted with test rats exposed to high levels of pesticides. (https://www.totalhealthinstitute.com/pesticide-exposure-damages-nervous-system-brain/). Although we tend to receive most of our contaminants via breathing there can be a cumulative effect when eating contaminated produce. Small amounts of pesticides are permitted to remain on produce per EPA guidelines but it is impossible to test every single food item for safe levels. With the risk of causing gradual damage to your nervous system switching to an organic diet can remove one potential source of pesticide contamination from your life. Cancer and Pesticides The Institute for Functional medicine suggests that exposure to pesticides has a link to an increased risk for a variety of cancers. The cumulative effect of pesticide poisoning means that not only can we breathe it in, we can also absorb it through our skin and of course find it in many foodstuffs. It is even possible to get traces of pesticides from fish that have been swimming in contaminated water. (https://www.ifm.org/news-insights/exposure-pesticides-herbicides-insecticides-human-health-effects/). Those wishing to live a safe life free of pesticide contamination must take steps to make sure their food supply is free of influence from these chemicals. Making sure your foods are sourced from organic farmers which are preferably far removed from areas that use pesticides is a great first step. Immune System Health According to beyondpesticides.org exposure to pesticides has been shown to have immunosuppressive effects. There has also been evidence of some chemicals causing a hyperactive immune response which in itself can be problematic. The more marked effects on the immune system do tend to occur with extreme exposure to pesticides but there can also be a cumulative effect. (https://www.beyondpesticides.org/resources/pesticide-induced-diseases-database/immune-disorders). There is a whole host of immune system disorders that can be caused or exacerbated by the presence of pesticides in the system. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are more nutritious than their pesticide-raised counterparts meaning that they boost immunity and do not have toxic pesticides. Do you know how many things in your home may be toxic? There’s probably more than you think there are. Almost every product in your home- from building materials to cleaning supplies- may contain environmental toxins that could harm your health. Where to Find Toxins in Your Home Take a mental walk through your home and consider the following products:
Items in your garage and can be toxic if they are stored improperly or leak. Electronics contain toxic metals. Furniture, carpets, paint, and wall coverings may contain toxic chemicals used to make them flame-retardant or last longer. Cleaning supplies are a significant source of toxins in your home. The products you use to store food can also contain toxic chemicals. Even your personal care products like shampoo, skin care and cosmetics may contain harmful chemicals. According to a study published in the Journal of Exposure Analysis and Environmental Epidemiology, people in developed countries spend 90% of their time indoors. All this time spent inside increases your exposure to toxins found in your home. In a meta-analysis published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, researchers found toxic chemicals in the dust from 90% of the home samples taken. According to studies cited by the World Wildlife Fund, over 300 man-made chemicals have been found in humans. The toxins from everyday objects in your home can affect you and your family’s health and well-being. Elimination To eliminate toxins in your home, consider how you may be exposed to them. As products break down over time, they release chemicals into the air that mix with dust. Homes with poor ventilation are at high risk of containing concentrated toxins. When dust is stirred up, it can land on skin, food, drinks, and toys children may put into their mouths. And many household chemicals are brought as part of cleaning and personal care products. Tip 1: Get Informed The government has multiple agencies that monitor and regulate safe and unsafe levels of environmental toxins. Knowing what is in your home is the first step to eliminating toxic chemicals. You can contact your local health department or check out the latest information about toxic substances online through government websites. If you plan to remove building products like lead paint or asbestos, strict precautions must be taken to minimize releasing more toxins into the air. Tip 2: Wash Your Hands Since dust can settle on any surface, eliminate ingesting it by washing your hands before you eat. Not only does this activity fight germs, but it can also help remove household contaminants from your hands. Tip 3: Take Off Your Shoes Don’t bring additional toxic substances from the soil outside your home into your house. Taking off your shoes when you enter your home is an excellent way to eliminate adding pesticides, dust, and naturally occurring toxins from the outdoor environment. A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives reported arsenic, a toxic chemical, on children’s hands after playing on playground structures made of older treated lumber. Tip 4: Dust Right Moving dust from one place to another spreads it throughout your home. Dust with a damp rag to eliminate dust from moving back into the air and landing again, causing recontamination of surfaces. Vacuums with HEPA filter bags help trap dust and toxic particles. Tip 5: Wear Gloves If you need to use a cleaning or other product containing harmful chemicals, wear dishwashing or latex gloves to protect your skin. Make sure your work area is well ventilated, so you don’t inhale excess chemical fumes. And store cleaning supplies properly, so they don’t leak. Tip 6: Use a Better Alternative You can find cleaning and personal care products that don’t contain harmful chemicals toxins. Or you can make your own products from natural, chemical-free ingredients. What will you do today to begin to remove toxins from the home for better health? If you would like to read more go here. This month we are sharing ideas to help you move toward a more natural organic lifestyle. Living an organic and more natural lifestyle has been our practice for many years and we believe the benefits of these organic lifestyle choices are shown in our health each day. By this point, you have probably realized that you live in a world filled with toxins. And because they are everywhere, they can be difficult to avoid. But if you want to start living a more natural organic lifestyle, the following ideas will help you begin this practice in your life. 1. Stop Eating Out When you eat out, even at a place that may be considered a healthy option, you never know just what exactly is being put in your food. And not only that but oftentimes restaurants add extra salt and flavourings in the form of MSG to make their food taste better. It’s time to start cooking your own food at home instead so you will know exactly what is in it, and in what amounts. 2. Cook From Scratch Now when people hear cook from home, they often think this means they can buy TV dinners, or a premade bag of salad from the store and count this as cooking. Have you ever read the ingredients in a bag of prepackaged salad? Chances are there are just as many chemicals hidden in there as in the food you would be eating at a restaurant! You should resolve instead to buy all the ingredients for your meals and cook everything, all the way down to the sauces, yourself. You may just be surprised at how easy it is to make things like salad dressing. 3. Buy Local And In Season This brings up another problem, often times the produce at the grocery store is sprayed with all sorts of pesticides and sometimes frozen to keep it looking good even in the off-season. Instead of shopping at your local supermarket, try your best to buy what you can from local farmers. This will ensure that the food is fresh and in season. According to Medical West Hospital, in-season fruit has a higher nutritional value than fruit that is eaten out of season. So, if you do need to buy something from the local supermarket, rethink your recipe if the item you want isn’t in season, or purchase organic whenever possible. 4. Make Your Own Soaps This goes for both the soap you use on your body as well as the cleaning products you use around the house. When you buy these products from the store, they are often filled with chemicals you can’t even pronounce the names of. Making your own soap is easy, and the best part is, you can choose your own scents! Creating cleaning products may be a bit harder, but you can easily download a recipe online and create the perfect cleaning product for each surface in your home. 5. Don’t Use Disposable Containers Whenever possible, try to replace disposable containers with reusable ones. For example, take your reusable grocery bag with you to the store and farmer’s market. And refill a water bottle rather than drinking from plastic ones all day long. 6. Start A Garden This one could be difficult if you live in an apartment, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. There are plenty of plants that you can grow inside during any weather! Whether you are growing plants indoor or outdoor, research the fruits and vegetables which grow best in your climate. Then don’t forget to pick up fresh basil and other spice plants, which will be great with all the cooking you are doing. 7. Make Simple Food Switches You’ve known for a long time that chips and cookies are junk food and are not good for you. And although it can be difficult to let these things go, it’s time to switch them out for something healthier such as fresh fruit. You can also make other easy switches such as white bread to something which is whole grain and seeded—as these loaves of bread have more nutritional value. Of course, this will be a process, so start just by switching one small thing in your diet at a time. 8. Exercise Regularly Exercising regularly is an extremely important part of living a natural life. This is because it keeps you healthy and reduces the number of times you will need to seek medical care throughout your life, as well as lowers your chances of developing certain diseases. Exercise helps to remove any toxins from your body. For best results, use exercise to replace a time in your life where you would use a car. For example, instead of driving to work, try to run or cycle. This will be better for your body and the environment. 9. Look For Natural Remedies If you are ill or injured, of course, you should still go to see a doctor. But if you are experiencing something such as a slight headache, a natural remedy may actually be a better choice than swallowing a pill. According to Healthline, eating some boiled ginger can actually help cure a mild headache just as well as an over-the-counter pain killer. And with ginger, there are no undesired side effects such as stomach upset or blood-thinning which usually come with painkillers. 10. Embrace Self Care None of the above things will be possible if you don’t take care of your body. This means you need to listen to it when it tells you to rest and do your best to keep it running at full speed. Self-care looks different for everyone, so decide what it looks like in your life, and stick with it. This will help to lower your stress and keep you on track to living a more organic life. Although these changes may seem too easy and like you aren’t really doing anything, even just these small steps can go a long way towards preserving your health and the environment for years to come. And these aren’t the only changes you can make either. You must always strive to live a more natural and organic lifestyle in any way that you find you can.
